A Bit About Me

IMG_6540.HEIC

Hello! My name is Tanisha Bhat and I am a graduate of Boston University where I studied journalism, political science, and Spanish. I specialize in digital reporting, and I'm interested in producing hard news coverage on topics including government, politics, local news, pop culture and entertainment. From my coursework, I have learned how to collect, analyze, and visualize data for data-driven investigative pieces.

My passion for journalism started in high school when I took my first journalism class. I enjoyed writing stories and interviewing people so much that I decided to major in it during college and pursue a career as a reporter. My goal in journalism has always been to inform my community about the news and injustices happening around them. I spent my formative years observing the impact of fake news and how harmful misinformation and disinformation can be, especially during the pandemic.

Attending school in such a bustling and vibrant city like Boston, and now working in New York City, has been a privilege so far. I have had incredible opportunities to report on important topics shaping the state and country at large. Throughout my career, I hope to continue chasing down stories, getting to know strangers, and delving into important investigations.

People Magazine · Digital Producer

In my current position, I adapt print and digital content for various platforms and cover trends in pop culture, music, film, crime and politics.

People Magazine · Editorial Intern

During my internship, I pitched, wrote and fact-checked articles for the website and print issue, covered events like press junkets and red carpets and helped during live events like awards shows. I wrote stories about the 2024 Presidential Election, political events, the Paris Olympics, Tribeca Film Festival, Paris Fashion Week, the Tony Awards, the BET Awards, Taylor Swift concerts, movie premieres, film panels and television shows.

Greenfield Recorder · Statehouse Reporter

As part of the Boston University Statehouse Program, I reported on the Massachusetts statehouse and covered bills/statewide initiatives through the perspective of Greenfield, MA. I wrote articles about infrastructure funding, housing affordability, ballot questions, the state budget and more.

Wheelock Education Policy Center · Communications Assistant

As a comms assistant, my main job was to update the WEPC website, summarize the research done by faculty, draft newsletter content,  prepare social posts for news items, and monitor big news outlets for relevant content.

HeadBox · Junior Editorial Executive

During my semester studying abroad in London, I had the opportunity to intern at HeadBox, a venue-tech start-up company. I worked with the marketing team to write content for the website. Each week, I researched pubs, bars, restaurants, and private dining venues in different areas of London and wrote listicles for each one.

Bay State Banner · Contributing Writer · Summer Intern

At the Banner, I had the opportunity to cover local news, politics, and events for Boston's minority community. I frequently reported on new initiatives from the Mayor's Office, town halls/virtual forums, and human interest stories.

NJ Spotlight News · TV/Digital Intern

As a summer intern, I shadowed reporters covering the 2022 NJ Primary election and contacted sources for interviews for larger stories/pieces. I also had the opportunity to cover the NJ State Legislature and the Senate Judiciary Committee. Throughout the summer I wrote profiles for candidates running for Congress in all 12 NJ districts.

Daily Free Press · Managing Editor

As managing editor, I edited for AP style adherence, fact-checked 50-60 articles per week, and gave final approval for all photos, graphics, and social media posts. I worked closely with the editor-in-chief and was responsible for coordinating and mentoring 16 section editors, making daily decisions, and setting publication policies and style guides. I also coordinated the monthly print issues, conducted weekly budget meetings, and approved story ideas and pitches.

Daily Free Press · Senior Reporter · Associate Campus News Editor

As a writer, I reported and wrote stories for the campus and city news sections. I covered topics including campus COVID-19 policies, police brutality protests, and new bills passed in the Massachusetts statehouse. As an associate editor, I edited and reported multiple articles a week for the campus news section, assigned stories to reporters, checked for AP style adherence, fact-checked stories, and helped gather sources for reporters.

Study Breaks · Culture Reporter

Study Breaks is an online pop culture magazine for college students. As a writer, I produced weekly 1000-word stories about music, television shows, social media trends, and movie reviews.

The Viking Vibe · Editor-in-Chief

I started my journalism career at my high school paper by reporting on school news and events. I also helped raise funds for our semester print editions. As EIC, I was tasked with editing multiple articles a day, creating a publishing schedule, and coordinating the print editions.
